What Adaptogens Should I Take?

Adaptogens are herbs that help the body adapt better to stress. They can be used for a variety of reasons, including boosting energy levels and immune function, improving mood and memory, and even helping with weight loss. There are many types of adaptogenic herbs out there—the most popular being Rhodiola rosea (also known as golden root), Ashwagandha, Schisandra berry, Eleutherococcus senticosus (also known as Siberian ginseng), Cordyceps sinensis and American ginseng root—but which ones should you choose?

It depends on what you are taking them for. While all adaptogens help the body adapt to stress in their own way, each adaptogenic herb is unique and has energetics of its own.

Here's my list of 9 adaptogens and what they are famous for:

Rhodiola

Rhodiola is a herb commonly used to treat depression, anxiety, and stress. However, it is used mostly to improve energy, stamina, and mental performance. Rhodiola is found in the cold climates of Europe, Asia, and North America. It has been over-harvested, so we should use this herb responsibly.

Rhodiola rosea has been used safely for centuries as a medicinal herb. In fact, the Vikings used it as an anti-fatigue agent before setting sail on their long voyages!

Ashwagandha

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a plant with yellow flowers from the nightshade family. It has been used in Ayurveda medicine to treat anxiety, insomnia, stress, sleep issues and to increase libido.

Ashwagandha means "smell of horse" because it was once thought to have an odor like that of a horse's sweat.

Rhaponticum

Rhaponticum is a plant that grows in Siberia and other cold regions of the world. It's also known as Maral Root, and it's a member of the daisy family.

Rhaponticum is used for energy and endurance, as well as general health. It also has a long history of being used to increase libido in both men and women.

American Ginseng

The American ginseng is an adaptogen is a powerful antioxidant that helps to regulate the immune system and improve cognition, mood, and physical performance.

It has been used for centuries to help with many symptoms of stress such as fatigue, anxiety, insomnia, and headaches.

Schisandra

Schisandra has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to treat fatigue and improve energy levels.

Schisandra berries contain chemicals called schizandrin, which are believed to be responsible for some of the plant's medicinal properties.

The active ingredient in schisandra is said to help regulate blood sugar levels and improve mental clarity while reducing anxiety and stress. It can also be used as an anti-inflammatory agent as well as a diuretic (a substance that increases urination), which may be beneficial if you suffer from urinary tract infections (UTIs).

Eleutherococcus

Eleutherococcus, also known as Siberian ginseng, is a widely used adaptogen. It has many benefits and is safe for most people to take.

Eleutherococcus senticosus has been shown to reduce stress, improve mental performance in stressful situations, increase energy levels, decrease fatigue and enhance cognitive function. Some studies have suggested that eleuthero can be helpful in treating anxiety disorders but more research is needed before we can say for sure whether it’s an effective treatment option. Eleuthero may also improve immune function by increasing lymphocyte counts in the body which improves resistance to infections like colds or flus.

Shilajit

Shilajit is a mineral-rich, black tar-like substance that is found in the Himalayan Mountains. It has been used as a traditional medicine by many cultures for thousands of years.

Shilajit is a major component of Ayurvedic medicine—an ancient form of healing that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. Its benefits are said to include:

  • Treating inflammation and improving immune function

  • Supporting digestive processes and helping to maintain healthy levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar levels

  • Helping with weight loss (especially when taken alongside other herbs)

Panax ginseng

Panax ginseng is a root that grows in the wild in China, Korea, and other Asian countries. It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries, where it's known as "ginseng". Panax ginseng is a powerful adaptogen that can help boost energy levels and reduce stress.

Cordyceps

Cordyceps traditionally is a fungus that grows on caterpillars (we now use a vegan substrate), and it has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for many centuries. Today, it's thought to help with fatigue and muscle weakness as well as improve V02 Max Output, and help with asthma and cancer symptoms. The Russians have also used cordyceps to treat liver damage.
